How a live copilot works, step by step
- Capture. It picks up audio from the call, either from the microphone or from the computer's audio output.
- Transcribe. Speech-to-text turns the interviewer's question into text. Accents, crosstalk and poor audio all reduce accuracy here.
- Generate. A language model drafts an answer outline using the question, your resume, and the job description.
- Display. The outline appears on your screen. You read it, decide what is true and relevant, and answer in your own words.
Each step adds delay, so even a fast copilot takes a couple of seconds from the end of the question to a usable suggestion. That is fine for a behavioral question and tight for a rapid-fire one.
What a copilot is good at
- Giving you a structure when your mind goes blank ("situation, action, result" for a behavioral question, a clarifying-question checklist for a design problem).
- Surfacing details from your own resume that you forgot to mention.
- Reducing the panic of an unexpected question, because there is a starting point.
What it is bad at
- Inventing experience you do not have. An outline built from a model's guess about your background will fall apart on the second follow-up.
- Reading the room. It cannot tell that the interviewer wants a shorter answer or is warming up to a different topic.
- Replacing preparation. If you have not thought about your own stories, reading a suggestion off a screen sounds like reading a suggestion off a screen.
Is it allowed?
It depends on the interview, and that is a rule you should look up rather than assume. Many employers and almost all proctored assessments prohibit outside assistance during the session.
