AI mock interview for system design rounds

System design rounds are won on structure and trade-offs, and both only show up when you talk. An AI mock interview gives you someone to talk to at any hour, asks the follow-ups ("what if that node fails?"), and shows where your explanation skipped a step.

What interviewers assess in system design rounds

  • Clarifying requirements. A strong answer: asks about users, scale and priorities before drawing anything, and writes assumptions down.
  • Estimation. A strong answer: does quick, rounded math and uses it to justify (or avoid) sharding and caching.
  • Structure. A strong answer: moves from API and data model to a high-level design to one deep dive, and says where they are.
  • Trade-offs. A strong answer: names what each choice costs and picks one for a stated reason.
  • Failure thinking. A strong answer: volunteers what breaks and how the system degrades.

Questions to practice, and what the interviewer is listening for

These are the kinds of questions a good mock interview asks system design rounds. Answer each out loud in under two minutes.

  1. Design a URL shortener.

Listening for: Requirements, ID generation, read-heavy caching, and a sensible data model.

  2. Design a rate limiter for a public API.

Listening for: Algorithm choice (token bucket vs window), shared state, and behavior under failure.

  3. Design a news feed.

Listening for: Fan-out on write vs read, ranking, and hot-user problems.

  4. Design a chat service.

Listening for: Connections, ordering, delivery guarantees, and presence at scale.

  5. How would you scale this design 10x?

Listening for: Identify the first bottleneck by measurement and propose targeted fixes.

  6. What is the weakest part of your design?

Listening for: Candid self-critique and a plan to address it.

How one resume bullet becomes five follow-ups

Interviewers rarely stop at the bullet. Here is the chain for a typical line. If you cannot answer one of these, that is where to practice.

Designed a caching layer for the product catalog API.
  • Which data did you cache and for how long?
  • How did you handle invalidation when a price changed?
  • What happens when the cache is down or cold?
  • How did you protect the database from a stampede?
  • How did you know the cache was helping?

Mistakes that cost system design rounds the round

  • Drawing boxes before asking a single requirements question.
  • Naming technologies without saying what problem they solve here.
  • Never putting numbers on traffic or storage.
  • Not mentioning failure, monitoring or what you would do with more time.

A three-session plan

Session 1: one classic design, timed to 40 minutes, narrated aloud. Session 2: the same design again focused on the deep dive and failure cases. Session 3: a different design to test that the structure transfers.

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI mock interview for system design rounds cover?

It asks questions built from your resume and the job description, plus follow-ups on each answer. Typical examples for system design rounds: "Design a URL shortener." and "Design a rate limiter for a public API." Each answer is scored on structure and specifics.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan includes one mock interview a day with no credit card. The Unlimited plan is $19 a month; current details are on the pricing page.

Do I need to answer by voice?

Voice is better, because it shows rambling, filler words and missing structure that typing hides. You can still practice in text if you cannot speak.

Will it write my answers for me?

No. A mock interview asks the questions and scores your answers. Use it to find weak answers and rebuild them in your own words.
