Product Management Interview Guide: PM Roles at Tech Companies
Product management interviews test product sense, analytical thinking, execution, and leadership. Google APM, Meta PM, and Amazon PM roles are among the most competitive in tech. The interview typically includes: product design, analytical/metrics, strategy, and behavioral rounds.
The #1 mistake PM candidates make is jumping to solutions without defining the user problem. Great PM answers always start with: "Who is the user? What is their pain point? How do we measure success?"
PM Interview Round Types
- Product Design — "Design a feature for X product." Use user segmentation → pain points → solutions → prioritization → metrics framework
- Analytical/Metrics — "Company metric X dropped 10%. Diagnose it." Decompose into component metrics, form hypotheses
- Strategy — "Should Google enter market X?" Market sizing, competitive analysis, build/buy/partner decision
- Behavioral — Leadership, influence without authority, conflict resolution. See STAR method examples
