Managing Interview Anxiety & Stress

Managing Interview Anxiety: Science-Backed Techniques

Interview anxiety is a physiological stress response, not a character flaw. The amygdala perceives evaluation as a threat, triggering cortisol and adrenaline release. According to ADAA research, 73% of people experience anxiety about interviews, and it affects performance when unmanaged.

The most effective anxiety management techniques are physiological, not psychological: box breathing (which can measurably lower cortisol within a couple of minutes), progressive muscle relaxation (reduces physical tension), and cold water on the wrists (activates the dive reflex, slowing heart rate).

Before the Interview

  • Box breathing — Inhale 4 counts, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Repeat 4 times
  • Power pose — Stand tall with hands on hips for 2 minutes
  • Reframe — "This is excitement, not anxiety" — relabeling the feeling (reappraisal) measurably reduces the stress response
  • Preparation confidence — Knowing you have practiced with AissenceAI mock interviews builds genuine confidence. See confidence building

During the Interview

  • Take a sip of water to reset (natural pause)
  • "Let me think about that for a moment" is always acceptable
  • Focus on the current question, not the overall evaluation
  • Having AissenceAI running as a safety net reduces "blank mind" anxiety

For comprehensive preparation: interview day checklist.
