Interview Body Language: What Your Non-Verbal Communication Says
UCLA research professor Albert Mehrabian found that 55% of communication is body language, 38% is tone of voice, and only 7% is the actual words. While these exact percentages are debated, the consensus remains: non-verbal cues significantly influence interview outcomes. A 2024 CareerBuilder survey found that 67% of hiring managers have eliminated candidates based on body language alone.
In video interviews, which now represent 86% of first-round interviews according to LinkedIn 2025 data, your camera angle, eye contact, and facial expressions are amplified.
Video Interview Body Language Essentials
- Camera placement — Position at eye level. Looking down into a laptop camera makes you appear uninterested
- Eye contact — Look at the camera lens, not the screen. Use NVIDIA Broadcast eye contact feature to help maintain perceived eye contact
- Gestures — Use hand gestures naturally but keep them within the camera frame. Gestures increase perceived confidence by 31%
- Posture — Sit upright, lean slightly forward to show engagement. Slouching reduces perceived competence
- Background — Clean, neutral background or professional virtual background. No distractions
In-Person Interview Body Language
- Firm handshake — 2-3 seconds, matched to the interviewer's pressure
- Open posture — Uncrossed arms, palms visible occasionally, facing the interviewer squarely
- Nodding — Small nods while listening signal engagement and understanding
- Mirroring — Subtly matching the interviewer's posture and energy creates subconscious rapport
